An inability to enjoy popslop is a curse.
It's isolating. It's limiting. It's time consuming.

Plug me back in already.

I only seek to read ya/scifi/fantasy/romance. I resented all the teachers/professors who forced me to read classics in which I had zero interest. I used Spark Notes to get through most of them anyway, so screw them. Now that I'm free, I can do what I want, when I want.

I also love Marvel movies. I've loved superheroes since I was a kid, and I still do. Admittedly, a lot of the recent ones have been terrible, but Thunderbolts and Superman were fantastic.

Understand what system of belief you have that is limiting you, making you feel bad, and then substitute it for one that will allow you to be who you are, a happy being. This is a process most people will have to undertake.

I can enjoy both Bach and disco. Both Tarkovsky and the Fifth Element. Both Joyce and Japanese RPGMaker porn games.
In fact, you should read Ulysses. It's practically a manifesto against high culture. Against literature and even the written word as a whole. Language is ineluctably limited, there are things you cannot express with it. Touch, smell, sound, taste, visual impact - no matter how beautiful the sentences, they are no substitute to actually living in the moment. Woolf famously hated it because it exposed her and her ilk.
"[Ulysses is the work of] a queasy undergraduate scratching his pimples [...] the book of a self-taught working man, and we all know how distressing they are, how egotistic, insistent, raw, striking, and ultimately nauseating. When one can have the cooked flesh, why have the raw?"

Disco and the fifth element aren't the problem. Those are just genres with a lighter tone and a different mood, Shakespeare also wrote comedies not meant to particularly enlighten but rather to entertain. It has it's place and everyone needs a rest. A more precise definition for slop should be art that's like porn but for different human needs. Netflix films were designed to be watched while you're on your phone, rap is designed to appeal to inner nigger in black kids etc etc. That's art that doesn't have anything to say and doesn't service the viewer, it only degrades them further in their addictions and fantasies. That's slop and even a few minutes of slop is too much to bare.

a reddit basedpogger can cry tears of joy just from watching the latest capeshit trailer, whereas it takes me two weeks of research/sampling to find something actually diverting that i'd give a 7/10.

NTA, but for me, ulysses is just a record. sure the ineluctability is there, but that's just how stephen thinks. the world around him reeks of the senses, each modal nerve poked, massaged, erected and reshaped in the image of a thousand irishmen. i don't think woolf so much hated it for being exposed in the sense that the art or genre she sought was exposed as one without merit, but rather that she was exposed for having the misfortune to live as a modernist in the shadow of a murky titan like joyce. some bottlecap glasses jerkface! of course she wrote journal entries about what an asshole he was. but when you read her later entries there's a clear gradual turn towards admiration and understanding. no, Joyce cracked the nut, he took everything everyone was thinking about and gave it a name.
