Are there any literary adaptations you feel did the source material justice?

The Godfather is better than the book. But then The Godfather Part II is crap. Which shows that style is important but substance is still more important.

Michael Cacoyannis' Euripides adaptations
Pasolini's Medea, Oedipus, trilogy of Life, Gospel of Matthew
Nostos il Ritorno to Homer
Werckmeister Harmonies
Rosselini's Plato's Apology and Cartesius (this TV film is the biographical parts of Discourse on Method essentially)

Off the top of my head those are first class

Nosferatu is a greater work of art than Dracula
I prefer the film of The Leopard, though that might be just prime Claudia Cardinale. Visconti’s Death in Venice is arguably better - making him a composer is more fitting

I didn't read Last Kingdom but I enjoyed the series very much so I'm curious what people thought of the adaptation

fuck yes! I've only watched Ifigenia (in Aulida), it was insanely good.
Plan to watch the rest after reading the original.

Pasolini's Medea from 1968 is also first class if you like Euripides.

I like the 1968 Brothers Karamazov Soviet movie
I didn't like it at first because I thought the actors were old but I think they actually got the characters right for the most part, wish it was longer
