Also ignore anyone that is telling you to read on your phone or tablet. They are clinically retarded

i use this. i know it says 32 gb sd card, but i put a 128 gb sd card in it and it works fine, though maybe that's because it only has 10 gb of data on it. the ui isn't perfect, i renamed all my files to be "[author last name], [first name] - [title] +the", but for some reason they're still alphabetized by the titles. i have no control over what books show up on the homescreen, it's just whatever i added most recently. still, it's a good size and it has color tempature lighting, which i like.

do the newer versions of kindle like the scribe or others have better notetaking abilities than the ancient ones? if you take notes on a book does it save to a single text file, or do all the notes save to My Clippings like they used to on the old ones?

had a nook before that and it crashed minimum once a week.

looking at swapping to a kobo libra color so I can annotate more easily but I can't decide if it's worth it.

Kobo seems good, but it's used market is almost non-existent, and new devices are too expensive for me right now. My current plan is to get a used recent Kindle Paperwhite (gen 10 at least) and jailbreak it.
My question is, can you absolutely eliminate all ties to Amazon by jailbreaking?

no ereaders are good
nothing is better than a physical book
you can't see physical progress on an ereader, you can't interact with the text directly/physically on an ereader, you can't simultaneously flip between two pages with total ease with an ereader. Lastly, any ereader depends on some level of digital reliability which is far, far, far, far less reliable than the reliability of paper on a bookshelf.

keep in mind i say this while owning an ereader, a remarkable. I have a library of ebooks i downloaded on there, things that would be inconvenient for me to buy online and I would never find in a local bookstore around me.
but i mean, literature and anything that i can find a physical book that i can focus in on with no distractions...that's the move

E-readers are literally evil

>>Research to date has generally found small but consistent advantages for print reading over screens in terms of comprehension and recall. Recent meta-analyses and reviews conclude that on average readers retain slightly more when reading on paper. For example, a meta‐analysis of 54 studies (171,055 participants) by Delgado et al. (2018) reported a modest advantage for paper over digital reading (Hedges’ g≈–0.21, favoring print). Likewise, a broad literature review of K-12 research (2015–2022) found mixed results: some studies show no mode differences, while others consistently reveal a “screen inferiority” effect (better comprehension on paper). In health-professional education studies, pooled evidence likewise leaned toward print: earlier reviews note that, although findings are sometimes inconsistent, “tend to favor paper-based reading for comprehension and retention of information”. In summary, large-scale analyses and reviews suggest that reading on paper yields equal or slightly higher retention than on-screen reading, especially under challenging conditions (long or informational texts, time pressure).

They haven't been in production for 5 years now. And I can't imagine many used ereaders are too worn out - people don't really read. The battery is ~replaceable.

New Libra is overpriced garbage with it's COLOUR meme screen. Literally better to read on any 10" tablet, would be 2-3 times cheaper as well

Nigger fuck off with this bullshit!

I've read EVERY SINGLE research they used in these metastudies. They tested reading PDFs on computer screens. Who would be comfortable reading books sitting on a random chair looking at an unfamiliar screen and using garbage adobe acrobat or some shit? That's why participants reported difficulty navigating and being lost in the text.

Only 2 studies (irrc) out of 50+ used ereaders, no more than 5 tested tablets. In one study students read on tablets they were given a week or two prior - to familiarize themselves with the device - and performed slightly better than computer readers.

Anyone citing these "studies" is a malicious actor, and anyone believing them is a gullible retard. Go ahead, check the methodology.

No difference or better than PC. Same for tablets for the most part. I don't really want to spend half an hour looking for the study, there was nothing in the title to set it apart from others, would have to check them all to find it.

It really comes down to comfort and familiarity with a device.
>Being able to lie in bed or sit back in a soft chair, set you own font, tweak reader controls
vs
>Read a PDF on a computer you've never used before in this this room we prepared for the experiment
Some studies had little to with reading comprehension (as in book reading), but only covered filling test sheets or other crap.
And of course journalists, "researchers" and other fags would only ever report or talk about how screens are bad because that's what the findings are, technically.

Kindle paperwhite is the best for 99% of use cases. If you care about buying your ebooks or using the library, Kindle is still the best if you're in the USA and Kobo is a close second. Kobo has better library access for the rest of the world. If you're downloading epubs it doesn't matter what ereader you have, they're 99% identical. Kindle probably has a slightly better screen but it won't be noticable.

Turn down the brightness and use font and background colors that are easy on your eyes. Pure black letters on pure white background will eventually give you eye strain. Play around with the colors and see what works best for you
>Also phones are very distracting, because of all the apps, notifications, calls and whatnot
Zoomer problem. Just mute or disable notifications. Additionally, what are you even getting notifications for? The only things that should be bothering the average adult are just phone calls and text messages, nothing else.

Since Kindle's jailbreak is patched, I'd get either the newest Kobo Clara BW, or the Kobo Libra BW. They cost up to 100 USD more than a Kindle, and no, it's not worth it hardware-wise. But the software is way better to adjust and navigate texts; and makes sideloading easier since you can add programs like Syncthing to koreader. And you don't have to convert the ebooks, which can take a while on calibre, or just not work, or have artifacts. I wasted so much time before jailbreaking my kindle. I wouldn't get one if you can't jailbreak, so just spend more in a kobo.

I really love my boox palma 1st gen. Got it used on facebook marketplace for ~100 dollars a year ago. It's just extremely portable, phone sized. Battery is fantastic. I can easily read anywhere, including on hikes, while laying down and easily navigate one handed. USB-C. Android. Easy to load on koreader (get the bookerly font). Can drag and drop files via usb-c but boox drop also works great and is super easy. I'm very happy with it.

I have a boox air4c as well that I sometimes read on. It's obviously a much more premium device but most of the time I still go right to the palma, just because it is comfier.

Better reading application, you can customize a lot more stuff, and you can set shortcuts for the many customization settings. Reading manga on regular kindle reader is a fucking pain in the ass, you have rakuyomi on koreader to download chapters on demand off websites like comick; and you can change the contrast if the scan is bad. Going back and forth through footnotes or searches is pretty easy if you shortcut the prev/next loc action. Big etcetera. I don't see the point in having an e-reader if you don't have koreader, two thirds of what I do is reading manga and technical books, which need the shortcuts for rotation or fit to width. For only reading .epubs, I guess the normal kindle is bearable, but I hate that line spacing doesn't match the bottom margin sometimes, I'm autistic about that.

Is there an android app that just lets me read pdf as if they were text (or epub)? ReadEra is my current app but it and nook fail incredibly at just giving the text instead of the fully formatted 8.5x11 version that can't be scaled. There has to be an accessibility reader that just fucking gives you the text, right? Right?

Also I've used calibre to convert to epub on my PC but it's mid and not worth doing for hundreds of pdfs.

Thoughts?

You might suffer from severe negrosis of the mind. What you're trying to do is retarded. Let's break this down.
>You have pdfs
Have you tried downloading epubs instead? If there are no epubs, would rotating the device horizontally fix your issues? More width, you know.
If your pdfs are simple text only fiction, and downloading an epub is out of the question, then get Adobe Acrobat (editor, not reader) and convert them to docx.

It's possible to reflow text pdfs (google "pdf reflow"), Koreader can do it, but I would rather read a scan than a reflowed pdf.

Scan - do OCR with FineReader, save as doc/epub.
Text - export into doc using Acrobat

Eh, not really. The kobo 2 is recommended so much because form factor does matter so much. Most other readers are a bitch to hold and turn pages comfortably and intuitively, and when that’s literally all they’re designed to do it’s good to talk about it. Phones and laptops and shit like that that where ergonomics are secondary can be ignored in the manner you suggest, not readers.

And if you do jailbreak and only use koreader, more the reason they would never touch your books.

Just get a Kindle nigger. They're all the same and have load of battery life due to the screens being low tech. Their isn't much difference between them as they do next to nothing to the pages. A paperwhite if you want to be fancy or there's a newer one with a better screen that does images but I'd just stick to one of the older ones. You get your book, you get a few days battery life. I've had my Kindle oasis for about 5 or 6 years connected to wifi, and not once has anything been deleted from it. People just make shit up on 4chan.

Note that to avoid OCR garbage with half its punctuation missing and littered with typos, you probably have to download at least 3-4 editions of any work you wish to read. This is why I personally prefer libgen (rip to most its mirrors) as it has no timers like Anna's.

If you can, try to get official copies from libraries etc. Sadly my own library system doesn't do digital lending, for whatever reason.

I only download epubs from reputable publishers where I know they're good. I even have bought e-books when they were not available on AA or at my online library.

I'm interested in switching to an e-ink display, but I mostly read PDF scans of old books from Google Books or Archive.org. Do e-ink readers work well enough with these kinds of files, or am I better off sticking with my Android tablet?

You'd have to use a proper big screen ereader for that. Anything 8 inch and up. PDFs on small screens just ain't pleasant.

I have a Tolino Shine 5, which is a Kobo Clara BW with gimped software. Got it for 120€ last year and so far I don't see any reason to upgrade. Does what I want: Reading pirated books without much annoyance

I have a pocketbook era and love it
Excellent build quality
Page turn buttons
Takes every format
Doesnt need to be connected to the internet even once
It being a bit slow is the only downside I can think of

The Android tablet I have has an 8-inch screen, which I think is adequate. I sometimes read PDFs on my phone with a ~6.5" display, which, like you said, is not so pleasant. I wasn't primarily asking about screen size though. I'm more concerned about how well the display renders scanned PDFs (which aren't always so clean and often have yellow pages), and that they don't get bogged down and crash with such files.
