Ever occur to you Machiavelli was a failed statesman himself? Machiavelli is such a unique philosopher because he is the first political philosopher who simply focused on how the world is and not how it should be. But all great men of history were not machiavellian exactly because they were not happy with the state of the world and wanted to shape the world in their view rather then bend to it. Machiavelli is a sobering book for a idealist but if you want to really control the board you have to imagine where you want the world to be and take everyone along for the ride.
