I know /lit/ doesn’t do advanced concepts like this but just in case I thought I’d ask about it. Is Pataphysics “real”? How would you best define it? From what I gathered it boils down to “advanced metaphysics” or the effort to deal with metaphysics in a more scientific way.

It's literally just mocking science by providing pseudo-scientific arguments for non-scientific phenomena, or somewhat conversely, provinng scientific facts arise from fantastical non-scientific phenomena.

It's just parody but the closest to what you're asking for is probably Rene Daumal's "Pataphysical Essays". In it he describes Pataphysics as being "as far removed from metaphysics as metaphysics is from physics"

You can get it brand new for like $15 from Wakefield Press. I especially liked the essay "Pataphysics of Ghosts" which is probably the closest thing to "actual science " you will find in the subject

All 'pataphysics purports to be is the unfettered use of mind, or, as the case is actually, language. Speaking generally, cleverness is merely that: cleverness; 'pataphysically, however, cleverness is pretty much Everything.

Rene Daumal in general is great. Sadly small corpus though, having died very young. Mt. Analogue, and, second, A Night of Serious Drinking are really fun, great little surrealist novels, also very metaphysical and mystical. He died too young.
