Is this still accurate? What are the must-read novels of this century?

Not an awful chart. Could add Hilary Mantel, Peter Carey, Deborah Levy, Elizabeth Strout, Colm Tobin, Alice Munro, John Banville and some poetry wouldn’t hurt

It's not like the books on that chart have changed. If you want more recent recs, I read Nobber by Oisin Fagan recently and it was terrific. And last year Brat by Gabriel Smith was published, which was also very good.

You should lead with which of those books you've read and liked, since then recs can be a little more directed. Otherwise what are you going to do with a few extra recs when you've already got a hundred to start with.

I have read basically no contemporary books, so I want to start with those that are already considered modern classics

Mlp does provide more profound insights on life than her books. Tried reading flights in original but I had to drop it because it was so shitty and pretentious. I couldn't stand it

The Buried Giant over Never Let Me Go? I can see how the latter may be considered more "juvenile", YA-ish, or something like that, but I can't think of any other reason to choose the unworthy TBG over the other. It's a fine story held down by the fact that Ishiguro's storytelling style does not work in the close third person.
