Luke Smith is, in my eyes, the culmination of this new generation of men without meaning and seeking one, only to find themselves trapped in contrarian ideology with traditional aesthetics. The guy had access to college, was educated, and even obtained a PhD in linguistics. But despite that, he still couldn't find meaning in this world and had to resort to adopting certain ideas and aesthetics to fill the void. It's a common and, quite frankly, sad pattern to witness. There is a substantial part of men (and to some degree women too) who have been given up on by society and find themselves spiritually alienated. It's a modern phenomenon that has taken on high orders of magnitude in comparison to past iterations. A large part of disenfranchised men are now incapable of forming meaningful bonds due to social reclusion. Their lives become meaningless, and so they cling to ideology as a basis for their lives. It's somewhat paradoxical—the people who advocate the most for a return to traditional civilization for a rebirth in spirituality are also the ones who were oblivious to meaning in the first place.

To go back to Luke Smith, I'd argue he's the pinnacle of that phenomenon based on two characteristics: firstly, he's adopted and shown a genuine desire to mimic everything "trad" in an attempt to conform to a very specific aesthetic. His desktop setup is completely useless and only serves as an image of a contrarian Linux user. He calls things "demonic" to virtue-signal; he tries, in most of his videos, to adopt a pure "trad" setup, whether for homesteading, camping, or whatever. He's become a pastor for an Orthodox church (?) despite no prior interest or knowledge about it, etc. He even has a page on his website listing the things he wishes to do, which aligns perfectly with the trad Orthodox larper stuff you'd see from 16-year-olds on TikTok. Secondly, it's clear that sometimes in the past years something pushed him further into his own ideology. There is somewhat of a clear cut in between his occasional conservative rants who were still interesting with occasional appearances of other guests (he mentionned multiple times his friends and girlfriends) and the present version of him.

It's sad to witness because, as I said before, he seemed to genuinely possess some intellect and good reflections. His old website wasn't filled with contrarian Christian slop (he used to have good reflections on art, libertarianism, etc.), and he made good videos on Linux alongside other genuine reviews and critiques of historical and philosophical works.

But alas, like most single and friendless dudes in their 20s, he had some form of spiritual crisis that led him down the path of Christian/trad contrarianism.

No, the only good thing scholasticism brought about is the preservation of greek thought. Other than that, it's just christian metaphysics applied to the real world.
