It's genuinely one of the worst written classics I've ever read. Switching of perspective mid chapter, stilted characterization, entire passages copied from other books, pointless meandering, very little descriptions etc

And I'm not even talking about the pieces of shit that are Books 3, 5 & 6. It's genuinely worse written than many genre sloppas written today

Joyce does this too.

Joyce has one of the most eloquent prose styles in English literature while Herbert's is as flat as a plank. It's no wonder he was a journo.

Herbert is known to be a hack writer in every respectable literary circle

>It's genuinely one of the worst written classics I've ever read.
Well, it's not a classic in the sense of anyone thinking he's a great writer.

>Switching of perspective mid chapter
His handling of viewpoint is indeed pretty bad. I've discussed this with people a few times and I'm convinced that the book would be improved immeasurably if told first-person by a bunch of different characters, one per chapter (like As I Lay Dying or The Sound And The Fury) *but never Paul*. That way Paul would acquire just the quasi-mysterious quality you want. Obviously some stuff would need rethinking (you get no direct access to Paul's thoughts, and scenes where he's alone are a problem) but the effort would be worth it, I'm sure.

>stilted characterization
No argument here. But the ugly truth is that Tolkien's characterization mostly isn't great either. So we should cut FH a bit of slack.

>entire passages copied from other books
Yeah, many people don't realise quite how much of the good stuff is stolen from Blanch (& others). That's sort of OK though; we would forgive him if the finished product were better. Books are made out of books & all that.

>pointless meandering
I don't remember this being a really big issue.

>very little descriptions etc
Nor this.

I thought the characters were very well fleshed out if anything

it baffles me how many writers (even the great ones) try to pull off multiple POVs during one chapter or even one scene; it's incredibly hard to pull off and even when done correctly most readers are left dazzled

Shit prose, poorly paced, predictable. The Villeneuve movies are genuinely masterpieces compared to this and I am not kidding or baiting. The writing is seriously YA tier if not worse.

dune as a single book is a passable court intrigue story although the paul wank makes it a bit too predictable
the sequels are where it really drops the ball

Messiah is the best book out of the 6. 3 is unreadable (apart from some very few passages) and 5 & 6 are genuinely YA in 2025 tier

Even as an anime it would deservedly be trashed into a maximum 5/10 rating by the least demanding weebs.
Didn't and never will read the sequels.

Dune was always going to be better as a movie: visuals are needed to make up for the bland prose. But george lucas already knew this.
