Truke. Once you get past the novelty of the format, it's a very thin story where almost nothing happens and the characters have no depth. It's very poorly paced as well.

Huge fan of his short fiction. Some of it is really pretty fun. This was a massive disappointment. Feel like it had caught on with the academic crowd and was pushed too hard in the mainstream. Not enough fun to catch on

Am I right to assume his short stories have unique interesting concepts? Because this book looks to rely on this one gimmick, but stretched to 400 pages which doesn't work.

Been a while since I've read them or this, and I often conflate his stories with Donald Barthelme's, but maybe there's your answer? I would say they're good. I liked pastoralia

Didn't this book win a Pulitzer or Booker or something?
