What would the literature scene look like and how would it have been different if the US specifically focused on continued union of the North American lands into one diverse country over getting involved in European wars?
>No Paris Hemingway; instead only Cuba Hemingway
>No WW1 F. Scott Fitzgerald, but instead some great Mexican war F. Scott
>No New York and LA socialite self-obsession, but more Drive West-Cowboy culture
Reminder that US troops invaded Mexico City in 1916, less than one year before the US first landed troops in Europe and never again successfully managed a land campaign in the Americas.

I agree. Especially considering the current state of modern South West states and Florida being an attempt at such union.

yes, but some literature always gets written at the end of the day. And honestly a literature about that would be more interesting than a J.D. Salinger, Jack Kerouac and Hunter S Thompson being the mid century Zeitgeist. This mopey and internal bickering literature movement definitely aided the decline of literature being a respectable medium.

I agree honestly.

ok, you think such a state wouldn't have opened up to asiatic immigration.
So, your point is there wouldn't be a Rupi Kaur and no Milk and Honey would have been written.

Who knows? German culture surely wouldn't have been surpressed as much as happened for the US involvement in wars against Germany, so maybe cajun French, Quebec, etc, all the Spanish speaking parts would have also had some German influence remain and not be replaced with English entirely. Interesting to think about actually.

In that case there would be way more Mexicans around so people will read more Edgar Allan Poe, and we'd have more mechanical knowledge and a much stronger auto industry so car novels would become very important. I can see Stephen King's Christine taking the place of Moby-Dick as the new great American novel.

True! If road trips weren't just from New York to LA, but from Montreal to Panama City that would be a whole new genre and meaning to the change in climate and culture.

I’m more curious as to what the language would look like. Would you still have large populations speaking English/spanish/french, would the languages blend, etc.
