I do not remember the very first book I read. What I seem to remember was that it was very short, around 40 pages, and I didn't get to the very last page. It ended as "it was all a dream" but that wasn't necessarily the real ending, and it was about a girl. I was very round back then.
I guess the first real book I read was Dr. Jeckil and Mr. Hide years later.

There was this thing back in the 90s where you could order a set of picture books with the names of the charcters changed to match your kids.
So my mom got a set of said books. I don't remember the title of them, but they were simple enough that when I was first learning to read, like around 5 or so, I could actually read the simplest of them on my own. I think by 7 I moved on to stuff like Cat in the Hat.
Took me awhile to become a strong reader though. Didn't have the focus for it until I was like 9. Where I read very short simple books like Freckle Juice, Super Fudge, Barfarama, and other kids books.

To be honest, Robinson Crusoe was my first book that I sat down to read on my own, I must have had others read to me by my mother, but I don't remember them either.
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hide must have left a lasting memory.

Wow, that sounds so cool! I would've loved it as a kid.

Yeah, no clue if the company still exist. I doubt it. Such a business model would have been hard to maintain back then all the way to now.

I was 10 or so and donโ€™t remember loving it but went on to read all of them, all the babysitters club, and all the sweet valley twins. Multiple times. I could have read the whole canon in that time.

It was fun then, it was weird but I also liked creepy and weird stuff as a kid... though I never read R L Stine at the time.

I sneaked into the school library and read a book on Egyptian mythology. Don't remember the title. It had beautiful illustrations. I remember being mesmerized by the Anubis chapter.

It was one of those early reader books about an astronaut. The last page said: โ€œI fly in space!โ€

I havenโ€™t been able to find it. This was around 2001 in British Columbia, Canada. I tried reading Robinson Crusoe when I was 10 but couldnโ€™t get through the first chapter. I read through it in my late teens and again in my mid-20s. I thought it was a commentary on commodification but then I read about Daniel Defoe and it turns out he really was just that autistic.

Most of his books were very good, I remember especially liking his books about King Arthur and Robin Hood.
