What's really stopping me from saving up $4-6k, applying for some remote job and moving to New York to live an extremely minimal life of writing and barely making living through a remote job?

Been thinking about this for a while, I'll be able to attend all the salons and literary events made by people and network while also just being able to give way to everything and just be a genuine writer. No stress in bills because whatever remote job I'll get will be enough for rent and I'd be fine with that life style. I'm worried about becoming disillusioned with the writing community there but being involved in that is much better than nothing or browsing here to be honest. I also don't think staying at home creates any wonder, it just seems like stagnation to me. Maybe also can date/marry someone rich?

Where would I find trouble here I don't see it.

You’ll find most of the people will be up themselves and you’ll get jaded.

If you're young, why not. Some go backpacking, some go to rehab, you can try to grind it out in NYC if that's what you want to do.
If I were you I'd try to get at least one thing published first, short stories or poems, anywhere you can. It's easier to network and get things out there if you already have proof that someone somewhere in the world was willing to read and publish your work. It can be a small online magazine, just get something out there which you can show people.
Just be careful of the rich kids in NYC who are writing dogshit and still get invited to do readings. They carry a lot of clout and could sway you from your path.

living where I do right now I'm completely bare, empty, and constantly distracted. Not trying dissuade what you say by my current situation but I live at home, still talk to old friends, and just work part-time in a job I don't really enjoy. I just feel as if I'm haunted by the past and cant give way everything to being this writer when I'm at home I feel immature and attached to the past. I love friends and family here but they kind of just remind me of who I use to be and nobody here that I know is into writing in any capacity so I just kind flow with them doing shit I don't care about as much. The only two points of contact of writing I have are emailing an old editor friend from some magazine here and emailing a very lowkey writer/professor descending from Gordon Lish, I wont say who. And I email them every few years or months a paragraph or so and they do back

I have two small poems published but my writing gets unstable or very parodic recently due to just being uninspired, stuck. I got the idea of moving from just kinda recently researching tao lin and his story now i'm just deciding that writing autobiographically for as long as i can and stringing that into a book, short stories, or a poem is actually much easier than just trying to be some obscure poet.

Writing without shame is also difficult in places haunted by my past like I'm ashamed of myself because the person I'm known externally doesent match what internally comes out. Thats why I just kinda want to give way to everything, I also am aware of jaded perceptions and people already, I took a really bad CRW class and abandoned the idea of unsolicited criticism from anyone I don't respect

You have that incessant, run-on, middle school reading level writing style of a zoomer who lives in a shithole town in the middle of nowhere. This is what it's like to read it:
>I'm in a shithole town and I hate my life and my job and it's not fun so what do I do because I feel bad all the time and I want to write do I need money. Because thats what I need and I go to the burger king and the burger is good but when the burger comes out I think about how Im a faggot and I dont want to be a faggot and that makes me cry because that feels bad especially when I jerk off because Gordon Lish is so good but yeah. So thats why and if you have any advice that would be good because I need that and Im a faggot and I dont read anything ever except for blog posts from people online theyre funny but I dont get them because theyre hard so thats what's going on there, I think maybe Im a faggot.
Go to the library and don't come back until you've aged out of your parents' health insurance.

Do you know anyone in New York City? Have family? If not then it's a big risk. You don't realize how much of a safety net it is to have relatives and close friends you can rely on. You will be at the mercy of strangers if you don't have any contacts there already. And you are going to need help if you plan on moving with only $6000 at most, cause that won't even last you 2 months.

No, just some friends. I'm obviously concerned about money what I would do with my current job but my main concern is whether or not this is a good idea to grow seriously as a writer. No place other than New York interest me in the U.S. because it's a very active and moving city steeped deeply in writing culture. Other than New York I've thought of places in South America because I'm bilingual like Mexico, Argentina, and Chile that also kind of have strong literary communities but it isn't as obvious a move for me, the culture isn't the same and I'd feel a lot more lost and confused

I'm also very turned off by the idea of Europe although I was very interested at one point because that would never be permanent move for me unless I learned the language but I'd be very far from everything I know

you grow seriously as a writer by writing. go to the cheapest place you can tolerate so your money lasts longer so you can write more.
>I'm bilingual
we can tell

I don't really care about how my writing appears to anyone in this thread that's not what I'm asking about

>>24552918
I get that but don't you feel also that they're are certain journeys or voyages to undertake on your own to come up with some sort of inspiration. To grow a new mold or way of thinking? I've always respected Rilke and how he lived his life, devoted everything to his poetry. He lived in poverty, moved around doing odd jobs, left his family, yet always stayed committed to his work.

If I moved somewhere affordable, on my own, and just wrote and published what I could to random online literary journals I'm sure i'd just end up feeling isolated and detached from anyone thing. There's a certain necessity in collaborating with other writers that you need for growth

If you find a stable and well-paying enough job, go for it. A move can be good for you, and NYC is a good spot for writing. Just don’t leap headfirst—make sure you can afford it

>necessity in collaborating with other writers
Yes, but this is the 21st century. Your physical location doesn't matter so much anymore when it comes to "collaborating." If you have any talent, most of your collaborating is going to be done remotely with editors, not with your buddies. Getting out is important, but your first goal should be to experience life and live some stories, and that doesn't necessarily involve other writers. You can go anywhere in the world. If you are a Spanish speaker there is a whole world of adventure waiting for you down there.

But being in NYC would allow you to network and make connections in the publishing industry, but you have to be good at that. Just being there physically isn't going to do the trick.

Buddy, if you can't write while working a part time job at home, you're not gonna be able to write in New York. The city will eat you alive.

this OP. you need to do more research if you think your plan is feasible at all. if you want to 'give it all to writing' just do that now, why do you need to move to nyc? if you want to create wonder backpack the world, don't move to nyc.

also what is this fabled remote job that pays enough to live in nyc and leaves you enough time to write? what kind of job were you thinking? because i have a feeling whatever job you're envisioning doesn't exist

I remember living poor in New York and it was constant salsa music (or whatever) from the neighbors and pigeons coming to sit and poop on the windowsill. Unless OP has money he's not going to find a clean, quiet place, and quiet is what you need to write.

dunno anon but New York has a very specific scene when it comes to writing and if you don't fit into it it's kinda useless... at least that's my perception of it
also this >>24553137

the only artistic thing that you can make a profit off in new york (due to foot traffic, the place being so densely populated) is to become a musician... either jazz/blues or one of those faggotty cover bands

today's new york ain't the sleazy 80s/90s one, not even the giuliani era one, that catered to visual artists and writers

just my two cents

>this anon dreams of going to new york and become a writer
find somebody to finance you bro, a lot of rich people would do it just for the lulz or to find whatever can be dug out from their city (new york)... they'd also provide you with an apartment and shit
it also goes hand in hand with what this anon said >>24553142 so if you are not gay just forget about it

If you don't have a remote job now, you probably won't have a remote job later.

Other than that, all that's stopping you is being a good writer
