He bought one after he got rich. His father tried to get one and was turned down. His wife had actual high status.

The order of events clearly suggests Shakespeare was from a poor lineage since the request is refused for his father. That said he’s not from the lowest rung of peasants either since the father had been a bailiff.

I could maybe add to this that the “controversy” is based on Shakespeare not having the status to have had a highborn education to justify his language and his historical knowledge. It’s really an aristocratic conceit that nobody low of birth could have excelled as a playwright beyond that of his betters. Hence why they rush to suggest people of more noble birth actually wrote the plays.
