Ludo means game. What director plays more with the medium? Godard, maybe.

If we separate 'playing' from 'good films' then really it should be Eisenstein. The Russians played more with montage etc.

If I were N Refn I think I would commit suicide or emigrate, rather than live in a country where I was publicly graded one step down from von Trier.

He's the least /lit/ director because he couldn't (and wouldn't, apparently) write to save his life. His musing on existence are flat and stupid, and his bigger contribution to cinema is his (ab)use of the steadycam from the Tree of Life onwards, which resulted in a series of movies that all look the same, and which inspired ad people to now sell us cars and similar products as if a new Ford was itself the unconcealment of Being.
If you want /lit/ cinema go for directors who are actually capable of writing dialogue and thought - fucking Richard (School of Rock) Linklater can write better screenplays than this retard.

Fun fact: Delon was to originally be Encolpius in Fellini Satyricon along with a bunch of other A listers of his day like the Beatles, Mae West as the nymphomaniac priestess, Van Heflin and Jimmy Durante but these casting choices fell through because the studio didn’t have enough money for all of them.
