I like pretty books, and go to great lengths to buy and read them
as a matter of fact, I often prefer them to books that I find to be visually unnappealing
does that make me a consoomer?

That makes you someone that appreciates esthetics, which is good. The consumerist masses buy for other reasons like status.

The consumerist masses do not buy their deckled edges and gilt lettering because of status. They find them beautiful, to say otherwise is foolish.

He who finds aesthetic bliss in sprayed edges is closer in mind and soul to the men who buy Funko Pops. This is worlds apart from those who find bliss in Joyce or Nabokov or Constable or Gainsborough. "Appreciates aeshetics" is a nonsense copout.

Speaking of which, the current publishing industry is a travesty. It's so hard to find well-made volumes. I have half a mind to go into printing just to print stuff for myself.
