I didn't care much for Shoot the Piano Player. Which of those works do something with a different approach to the genre or is that book indicative of the genre?

I canโ€™t tell if Night of the Ripper is a plain crime story or falls under the slasher umbrella. Some of the prose is great but other parts feel stilted.

Wow, talking about synchronicity, i just got a hold of a bunch of Hardboiled works from my favorite authors and i have them in my backlog for later. I call the collection "hardboiled saga". The authors (in reccomended order of reading) are the following:
>Dashiell Hammett, complete works
>Raymond Chandler, complete works
>Mickey Spillane, Mike Hammer series
>John D Macdonald, Travis McGee Series
>Ross Macdonald, Lew Archer series
>James Crumley, S&M Series (At least the first bunch of books)
>Derek Raymond, The Factory Series
>James Ellroy, LA Quartet & USA Underworld
>Ian Fleming, James Bond Series
>John Le Carre, Smiley Series

Maybe Le Carre, sure, it feels like a bit of a stretch, but i think the Hardboiled spirit carry over Fleming works as well. By the way, Chandler praised the Bond novels immensely, which i think is really cool.

Excellent choice.
Also, don't overlook Macdonald's earlier work.
"A bullet for Cinderella", I thought was a classic.

Not accusing, just saying.
In the WebNovelGeneral, for instance.
Discussion also includes writing in the genre, not just reading commercial in the genre.

The first book I did, where I *specifically* went for a "a Bullet for Cinderella" vibe deliberately from the outset...

It came out a tight, linear 80k hard-boil with noir aesthetics. I went with true first person for this genre. I like the feeling of connection reading, as you see and hear through the eyes of the single person. I ended up with a surprisingly emotional ending, too. If you guys wanted, I could post a sample chapter from it.

Only ever read the Philip Marlowe series of books by Raymond Chandler. Currently reading Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K Dick. Dystopian, though don't know if it counts as pulp or noir.

noir exists on its own, but its effective when mixed or blended with another genre.

Is there anyone one else like James Ellroy?

An author who mixes noir with conspiracy thriller?

I've read the L.A. Quartet and the Underworld USA trilogy, and I loved it so much and I'm looking for something else to scratch that itch.
