I usually finish a 300 page book in about a week at a fairly leisurely pace. So I’d say a month or just over that. That’s about how long it took for me to read LOTR in totality.

Let's imagine you're reading Les Miserables in an English Translation in order to boast about it on a social media site.

in that case i would just read an ai summary and have the ai tell me how long the average person would need - if i want to portray a struggle, i add to it, and if i want to seem smart, i subtract

It is pretty sad that people read texts to boast that they've read them, rather than to grapple with the text and uncover the critique in the relationship you have with the text. Unless you're doing it for work and have to make a contribution to a scholarly argument by just having read the text to the point of its contribution to the argument.

Depends on the book. Some fantasy slop like a Wheel of Time book I can knock out in under two weeks. Don Quixote and Middlemarch (though Middlemarch isn’t quite a 1000 pages) both took me about a month

depends on the book

I think less of people who brag about how quickly they read

I can read way faster if I do so while also listening to an audio book. I’ve read about 1000 pages of actual text of will durants story of civilization in 10 days listening to audio book of it at 2x speed. If I didn’t have that it would probably take me 3-4 weeks to read that much.

yes im sure you have great comprehesion of the text as well

whats the point of "reading" a book if all you do is look at the words on the page without interalizing the ideas

Took me 6 weeks. A bit of a slog sometimes but I did learn a lot. I was pretty ignorant regarding the Western theater other than Vicksburg. I vastly underestimated the size of the Battle of Chickamauga. Some of the battle stories were like something out of Greek mythology with all the drama and reversals of fortune.
Taking a break before I start Volume 3 even though I found Volume 2 very rewarding.

"Pages" are not a meaningful measure of length unless you're in grade school. Only word count is acceptable.

if you talk to any librarian, they'll tell you about people who come in to buy a shelf worth of "classics" just so they can display them in their room
when you have an interview on TV and that person is in front of a shelf full of book, expect them to have no read half of them, books are a symbol of status and people who don't read love to showcase the fact that they have them

The author says in a letter that he intended this to be like the American Iliad :)

I read it in a week in middle-school, and I remembered every detail and had a good score at the reading comprehension exam afterwards. There was also another short book I read in an evening and had a perfect recollection off.
Now it takes me months to read a book and a few months later I can open it up again as if it were the first time.

Your message sounds very reactionary. Think about it for a few seconds. If you don't understand then try what anon does and you'll realize it's actually better for comprehension.
There is a reason teachers talk while they write on the board. Mixing visual and auditory learning is better than only one.

I haven’t read any book longer than 500 pages.
Brevity, wit, etc.
