Do I need to read Sir Gawain and the Green Knight before this?

No. The Green Knight is completely self-contained and has very little to do with the wider Arthurian legend. It is kino, though.

Just read the original in Middle English unless you're an ESL.

I thought that anon was referring to Le Morte d'Arthur in the picture which is a big brick, but yes Sir Gawain is not too long. That being said 2500 lines of poetry or so is nothing to sneeze at when read in the original.
>>24559700
Not that anon but read the original even if you are ESL, it will make it more fun. But I'm sure Tolkien is fine. I was encouraged to read Simon Armitage's translation at uni.

In my opinion, Tolkien's translation is excellent. he spent a huge portion of his life studying English mythology and I feel he is reliable. Like other people mentioned, you could read it in the Middle English if you want. Not everyone likes that, though. I personally like reading original Middle English / Early Modern when I can.

Not relevant. There's a thousand other ways to discuss virtue- or the lack of- in the modern age.

Donald Trump, although probably the best out of a bad bunch, is hardly King Arthur. He's still a fat degenerate at the end of the day.

I personally enjoy the Victorian and early 20th century retellings of the Arthurian saga such as the ones by James Knowles, Charles Hanson, And Joseph Bedier
