It doesn't. I too fell for the "scariest book ever" meme. Johnny's story is probably the most interesting part about HoL, would have been better by itself as a traditional narrative. Sure, it wouldn't have been quirky and unique, but it would have been competent at least.

The house stuff was underwhelming.

The book is a novelty, the novelty been that it isn't something you simply read but something you have to actively participate in, flipping and turning the booking to deal with the crazy formatting and notes. In the end it isn't worth it, it's a gimmick for an average story, to mystify and intrigue r*dditors. This evaluation probably comes off as pretentious, but that's Danielewski's fault for handing us slop and telling us it is The Odyssey. I like slop, I read The Banned and the Banished multiple times, but it was honest, it wasn't pretending to be LotR...

OP here. I can tell that it’s not going to be that wild, and the fake footnote thing is already wearing out its welcome 19 pages in. That said, I baitposted to get replies about the book. I am enjoying it right now because of the little tricks like the footnote continuing on for 3 pages and cutting out the main story for a bit.
