Poetry that dabs on YHWH is the best kind. A robust tradition.

He's complaining that all creatures on earth sin, but only men are punished for it. He also wants to be forgotten rather than remember, like most people.

A bit by modern standards, but you gotta judge with its time.

What edition is this? Haven't seen one that doesn't modernize spelling/punctuation.

yes but he outright admits that intent and reason exist as differences between him and them. he's not saying he's at the mercy of his instincts, he's saying he knew better and did it anyway but that shouldn't matter. and i don't even care morally, i'm not a christian, i just think it's a pretty lazy conceit for a poem.

What's a high effort conceit for a poem? They tend to be simple, like "I love this woman but we died". Donne forms a passionate argument against God and then rebukes himself as he turns that same Reason back on his own angst. He's expressing the vicissitudes of passion and faith in a way that's both realistic and beautiful.

Yeah, he is one of my favorite poets but I do find him too sentimental at times. His poems would be good to send to a bitch

Yes, of the all-time Greats of English poetry. I've been meaning to memorize his wonderful The Ecstasy for a while. Love that poem, among others.

The writer is not asking for mercy, he's asking to be forgotten entirely instead of remembered, like most people. That's what makes this sonnet so unusual for its time, because a typical prayer asks God not to forget them and to not leave them or forsake them. Donne is not asking any of that.
