If this had been written in the current year do you think the Whitney Houston chapter would've been about Beyonce? Let's talk about it

Can you imagine a 27 year old Indian San Fran tech bro with HIV pull out a business card with a QR code on it?

I mean to be obssessed to the point that people throw way to much $ at someone they will never become close to
Or to idolize someone they dont actually even know
It would be cooler if instead of pro footballers or justin beiber , there would be $ thrown at local amateur footballer games, or $ thrown at local cute boy bands. I suppose people would rather watch super star on television, rather then go see local talent at the local theatre
My best explanation is that smaller stuff is more soulful, and most people are soullless and prefer the more soulless entertainment

It would play well with an 'influencer', Logan Paul type traipsing through Japanese an hero woods gawking at the recently hung for clicks. Skibidi rizzler nonsense would suage it toward Clockwork Orange.

No, because American Psycho is profoundly rooted in the zeitgeist and cultural background of its time.

And our current zeitgeist is somehow completely detatched from that? Completely unrelated? Is that what you're saying?

If it had been written ten years ago, yes. Now, no. The 2020s has no popular music, all the stores just play songs that were popular in the 1980s or 2010s. In a 2020s American Psycho all the chapters that are just rants about some musician would be replaced with rants about some youtuber or other flavor of eceleb.

No, but it's very much rooted in that specific zeitgeist. Ours has changed even if it still has clear connections.

Simone biles is the one that bewilders me the most as a non American. You can have someone that shows the rest of the world that the US has the most skilled people on Earth and nationalist chuds are still gonna seethe at them

the movie/book is all about virtue signalling
protagonist doesn't believe in superficial happy go lucky world albeit plays along
virtue in 90's - greed, can-do , money
vice in 90's - hookers and coke
virtue in 20's - palestine, trans lgbt, hookers, crack, PoC
vice in 20's - suicide, self harm, fentanyl
the movie/book should undergo a remake, it would be funny to see the protagonist trying to signal virtue, then get consumed by vice and then undergo psychotic breakdown bc of inner conflict.

This is a tangent, but I don't yet see a lot of people calling our current decade just "the 20s", so that's interesting from a linguistic perspective. Is it because the phrase "the 20s" is still too active in our minds as meaning the 1920s? At what point will that change? Will people in the 2030s be saying "we live in the 30s" more often?
