Now that I think about America doesn’t have great novelists. There’s a number of "well-known" ones, but those of legendary status I can only think of short story writers such as Poe (and the greatest of them all, Lovecraft) and contemporary horror / thriller writers like Clancy and maybe King.

You could spend a lifetime on 20th century American novelists and never run out of good ones. America's novelistic output is competitive with any European tradition you like. Pic related for instance is a perfect 10 and hardly anyone even knows it exists.
