>>24566402 (OP)>Is Brandon Sanderson woke?Yes, in the sense that he's aware of systemic injustices caused by inequality. No, in the sense that he's politically left or aligns with anything associated with it in a truly meaningful way.
>I came across an article saying that there’s a lot of wokeness in that book, including a trans army or some shit like that. Is all that true? Here's what was in his latest Stormlight Archive book, Wind an Truth:
>a shower sex scene between a married heterosexual couple (although there are no actual sex acts described, nor explicit descriptions of breasts or genitalia)>A mostly-normal gay man (confirmed gay several books ago)>A male gay couple (composed of a literally autistic human and a type of alien/metahuman)>A legally-recognized female-to-male transgender person who volunteers to help a desperate army and is depicted as being particularly strong but still viewed as obviously-female by a male character from a different culture>a researcher monk that seems to be non-binary that joined their order to escape male attention>a non-binary magical spirit/fairy AIThose are the most obvious ones that stand out to me as significant. There may be others I'm forgetting or were featured in previous books more.
>I thought this guy was supposed to be a Christian, what the fuck?Sanderson is Mormon/Latter-day Saints. Mormons have an extra holy book and set of spiritual dogma that EVERY single other Christian denomination says is heresy. It's considered extremely disingenuous to pretend that Mormons are "actually the same" as other Christians. Mormons tend to align culturally with white American protestant Christians, but they aren't exactly the same. If anything, Mormons are known for being slightly MORE conservative though.
With that out of the way, you may as well read Sanderson's own thoughts on the matter. Here's something he wrote on the subject himself in 2023:
https://faq.brandonsanderson.com/knowledge-base/ive-heard-you-are-a-practicing-member-of-the-church-of-jesus-christ-of-latter-day-saints-what-are-your-opinions-on-gay-rights-particularly-in-light-of-the-churchs-controversial-rel/
It also contains a link to an older blogpost he wrote about Dumbledore from Harry Potter being gay.
Sanderson catches shit from areligious liberal-progressives because they think he won't commit to being openly pro-LGBT. He catches shit from religious conservatives because he has gay people in his books. In his older Dumbledore blogpost, he has this line:
>Point Two: DEPICTION is NOT ENDORSEMENT. I personally think Sanderson still believes this, even though he walks it back a little publicly. I don't think, as a devout Mormon, that he thinks being gay is morally good or even just benign. He probably teaches all his kids that being gay is a sin and unhealthy. That said, I think he is fully aware that he exists in a world with gay people that he believes are mistreated, and uses his writing to explore this because he's a huge nerd.
