What, did you pick up Proust and get this urge on the first page? Good lord, more than four hours in a sitting and I'm certainly going to need a break.

I think I read almost 24 hours when I was traveling by night train and had the unabridged The Stand with me. 1200 pages or something. I was also 14 or something.
Before that I read LotR pretty much non stop for days but not 24 hours.

I get that but unless your book is 1200 pages you shouldn't need 24 hours. And what's the point of reading multiple books in a single day.
Fact of the matter is that you can only get away with this reading behavior if you don't have to let the material marinate in your mind.

You can let "material marinate in your mind" while reading multiple books.

I am sure most people in academic jobs can and should read different materials. I do, anyway.
The main difference is that you do that every day, forever. Maybe pick up a thing or two that you can use later in writing.

1st year undergrad polisci. Didn't study all semester and the final was on arbitrary sections from the course readings. Good times.

I am also sure most people in academic jobs dont read 24 hours without breaks, knowing their ability to soak up the material deteriorates tremendously, precisely what stops you from effectively letting the material marinate.
There is a difference between reading multiple books for a study for a few hours a day and 24 hour nonstop readgoonfests.
Lastly, the people who do these challenges, are not those kinds of people. We arent talking about mediocre academics, we are talking about women.

Books become exponentially less enjoyable after 1-2 hours of reading. Especially if you're actually thinking about what you read. Even the most enjoyable book I read in years I only put 3 so hours a day in for it.

Oh I understand now, your gripe is focused on the "reading multiple books" angle. Thats not a problem
>you can only get away with this reading behavior if you don't have to let the material marinate in your mind.
This reading behavior is not about reading multiple books at a time, its about reading for 24 hours a day. I only mentioned multiple books in response to >>24566852
Because one book is easily finished in half a day, slightly less.
