The ending to the GOT show was the real ending Martin had planned all along. The fan reaction/backlash scared George so badly he's been procrastinating ever since writing Elden Ring and re-writing Winds of Winter 3-4 times now just trying to figure how the fuck he is going to dig himself out of this hole. George will die before ever finishing the book series, and it will become slop when the incomplete mess inevitably gets picked up by another author after his passing, just like how the Dune franchise was murdered by Herbert's son.

Just think, all this slop and shit could have been avoided by just letting the Lannisters (the good guys) win and ending it there.

You could have chosen the correct path.

it's not so much the ending in itself but that it was badly written that made people mad

The writers of GoT don't get nearly enough credit for actually contriving an ending to the unholy mess Gurm handed them.
Gurm fans have no right to criticise until Gurm himself produces a better ending, which he is clearly incapable of doing.

You FOUND OUT what's going to happen to her. The OP is correct. The TV show's ending is, broadly speaking, what Martin has always had in mind. This means Dany's fate is to go crazy, burn King's Landing on Drogo, and get murdered by Jon.

You're better off reading literally anything else related to her than the actual books at this point. Go read some Dany weight gain fanfiction, it'll treat her better than A Song Of Ice And Fire has always planned to do.

He has actually already finished Winds and is 75% done with ADoS. The reason it's taking so long is because GRRM wants to release both at the same time to spite the fans who complained it took him a (reasonable) fifteen years between books. Now, no one gets to complain.

George is a fucking hack, went back and read some of his pre-ASOIAF books. They're all mid as fuck. Fevre Dream is his best work by far and only because it's so short and sweet. He also reuses concepts too much and loves lore dumping too fucking much. Great prose, horrible structure.

Low IQ. The show diverged too much. It skipped or remade too much book material. It is it's own continuity.

The show went to shit in a way that very closely mirrors the same kind of writing as every other nepobaby authored piece of trash of the last 15 years.
It feels nothing like Martin's writing and if anything it shits on what he was aiming for entirely.
That said, I do believe Martin is aware he's written himself in a corner with three whole plotlines going nowhere and needing plot magic to provide resolution, so he's waiting for the heart attack rather than face the unavoidable shitstorm.

The entire trouble is his shitting "gardening" approach to writing. I can't imagine writing a story as big as ASOIAF and not having a fucking hard outline that you'd stick to. I don't understand how he allows himself, how he tolerates himself, going down the rabbit holes he goes down, given the sheer scale of things he's got to wrangle. It feels irresponsible on his part.

>assassins creed Arya embeds as a wight and kills the Night King
>Dany goes mad queen and jun snoe has to kill her
>stannis sacrifices shireen to a god that doesn’t exist
All of it would work out fine in book format. But you also have to work catelyn in somehow after the show basically told everyone it’s a meaningless storyline and the hodor nonsense and bran time travel autism is just a bad idea in and of itself.

> The entire trouble is his shitting "gardening" approach to writing
It’s an approach that fit serials like comics and network tv shows. Things that need to fill time. It doesn’t work for labor intensive, more focused storytelling mediums like novels (even if they’re in a series) and premium cable short season television.

The only thing crazy about burning King's Landing is that she waited too long to do it. If she had done it immediately upon arrival everyone, including her enemies, would have shrugged and accepted it as rational strategic move.

Don't forget the show hilariously and unceremoniously wrote off Dorne entirely when they're still pretty integral to the overarching plot of the books.

The lore dump where Joshua explains his backstory was something else. It felt long enough to be a published short story in its own right.

He should have had all the families unite against the Nightking army for an epic climatic final battle involving all the factions. Instead he had that english chav goblin backstab the Nightking and the plot dribbling off after that.

Also, where were those fucking giant ice spiders that woman talked about in the first episodes. I watched the entire series waiting for them to make an appearance.

I just hope they come up with some reasonable way to make Bran king. Anything would be better than "Tyrion makes a speech and says Bran should be king, everyone agrees".
