I think it's about the court trying to find a motive for Meursault's crime by trying to find its meaning in the context of his previous actions and building a narrative off of it. But Meursault had no such inner motive, and all his actions were truly random and born of indifference. Meursault vs the world parallels Camus's philosophical dichotomy of man vs. the universe which is the birthplace of The Absurd. As for the literal events of the novel itself that's not really the point
