You wake up one day as the Executive CEO President of Education.

How would you fix the plummeting literacy rate among highschoolers?
Hardmode: You do not have unlimited budget.

I wouldn't. It is impossible. People choose to do whatever the fuck you want, you cannot force them to do anything. They have access to the greatest collection of books ever amassed so far. And yet they either choose to ignore them or read shit. Just ignore them as well and focus on the 0.5% who cares.

If the only goal is fixing literacy rates one should "deport" foreign kids out of school. With growing share of people that didn't grow up speaking the language of an country it is only natural that the literacy rate is plummeting. You can see this in most western countries. And even in these countries itself. Cities with higher share of foreigners tent to decline in PISA studies and shit.

Nothing against all kinds of foreigners. But I think that is the main reason.
Because of the internet and stuff I would think that we would have a rising literacy actually. People start to speak more languages and every dopamine eating tiktok videos now has subtitles because it isn't enough to just hear the bullshit that is said there.

I don't know any way to make people actually like reading more. Maybe there is no way. But that may be the only way

Make them hand write stories about simple facts. That's the whole day of education. Writing down stories. How was our planet earth created? Come up with an story made up by yourself. The objective is to build a creative habit in the student, wich will lead to a natural need for increasing data check, and seeking new semantic tools, etc.

Of course, it is an expressive medium, an spiritual and psychological vent. Today our children, and everyone in general, are just "vacuum cleaners", just forced trash bins destined to eat, absorb and get filled with any mass produced shit available in the "market". They are not able anymore to express anything from their inner selves. Just to eat shit, to be the recipients of shit. That needs to be reversed, they need to produce thoughts and and ideas, urgently, before our brain functions start to devolve naturally for the lack of use.

The teacher should know how to play an instrument and then we can start with the basics.
Teach them the alphabet and what different sounds each letter makes as soon as they know how to speak. Then they should read some simplified bible stories and try to make a drawing from each story.
When they get older, the teachers should have the students sing and perform some classic boomer rock songs. The students would also need to read propaganda books that's in my interest and have monthly discussions about it.
And now that they enter highschool, I will allow them to start with the greeks.

Book industry should just make AI books that interact with you and you talk to them. Any word can be defined instantly in app, with voice expression. Its gated AI that will only talk about the book or issues around the book. The pages go by and AI Art appears to show what's happening and inside the art are the words. We need to reinvent the book with AI. Surely, ChatGPT would enjoy the credit of improving literacy through books.

Do Americans not learn what sounds letters make, followed by reading simple texts?
I started learning English in 5th grade, and the first thing we were taught was IPA phonetics.
Also had a dedicated music teacher (approx in grades 3-7) with weekly lessons. He played bayan and piano, we learned notes and sang, listened to classical music.

>Do Americans not learn what sounds letters make, followed by reading simple texts?
No. They don't. Because some jewish fuck came up with this retarded theory called "holistic reading." Holistic reading insists that you can learn how to read by memorizing the shape of words and the context of nearby words. So instead of knowing the letters t and h and e together make "the," you think "this word starts with t and it's short and at the start of a sentence so it must be "the." If this sounds like complete bullshit to you, that's because it is. But for decades, the kike who came up with this theory faked a bunch of evidence to prove that children actually could learn to read this way.

It wasn't until recently, like 2023 or 2024 that people finally came to the conclusion that no, this guy was full of shit and all his students are just pretending to read. Because the problem was, whenever they encountered a new word they had no idea how to sound it out, or what it meant.

The current literacy rates in the US are what happen when you "trust the experts" instead of using common fucking sense.

Alright, complete school reformation with no rules? Ok. School is 9am to 9pm, attendance is non mandatory, students are encouraged to travel freely between any class they please at will. There are public discussions on various topics daily, socratic style open discussions moderated by teachers. Students get goodies like cool pencils or an extra choclote milk for handing in stuff like book reports and essays.

My god, wtf.
I get the idea of immirsion learning, something latin learners do - just start reading simple texts that gradually introduce new words (like in Hans Orberg's book). But what you're describing is some advanced niggardry.
I much prefer having a solid ground to build upon. Learning actual phonetics allowed to quickly establish general patterns, which reinforced and accelerated learning, and allowed to properly read unfamiliar words. Knowing the underlying structure seems like a better way than just staying on the surface level.

We live in the age of compression. Nobody wants to read a single unnecessary word anymore. Let them use AI however they want but grade harshly. It teaches to think about how something is written, if it‘s coherent and correct, to reflect on what a text says, how they would write it differently, what they would add or take away, etc. It ends up with them reading a lot of text and having to actively interact with it. They learn to fact check and to not just trust a text because it sounds good. Ofc there would still be those that don‘t learn shit from it but those simply get shit grades and would have been filtered regardless.
Nowadays you have to make literacy interactive, individual and relevant or it will be a waste of time.

- Everyone is taught to ride horses from the age of 5 giving them a smart edge to know about the world, and a strong will to live
- Reading is banned until postsecondary, everything is oratory/auditory.
- Vending machines (and sugar and corn syrup) is banned. Cash prizes are awarded for destroying vending machines.
- Literacy rate definition shall be changed to be singing and horse riding excellency.
- The revolution will spread from Australia to New Zealand, and then Canada, USA and Mexico, and finally India, Europe, and South America.

strict racial and ethnic segregation, ideally even by european country of origin italians and anglos should be taught seperately we'd do a genetic test and then arrange in whatever makes the most since (since americans are all mutts would have to be basedon the particular situation)
they could use the same building but blacks, hipanics, etc. would have totally separate buildings and teachers that are far away.
that + strict punishments (including physical) and also probably separate schools by sex as well.

after that rip of anime high school stuff, focus on club activities, kids taking agency and doing things and they are punished for failing and rewarded for succeeding. They are also responsible for maintaining the school building/grounds and have to work outside and maintain a garden

you may not like it but this chudmaxxed response would improve the literacy rate

Modern culture and technologies that define what kids care about are antithetical to book learning, and barring financing militant luddites to firebomb data centers the only solutions are:
>bastardizing education into something more in line with these technologies (education via tiktok shorts - retarded)
>somehow convincing parents that the ipad they give their child to shut them up is actively rotting their brain
The more educated and judicious sections of the upper classes already understand the latter. Good luck convincing your average parent of this, that themselves spends 8 hours a day on their phone and sees no great issue. You might as well ask them to become an ascetic. Certainly not something that any secretary of education could solve alone without broader cultural shift

I have two gen alpha kids and their literacy is good. So is the literacy of their peers. This is just teachers wanting to bitch and moan because they hate their job and don‘t know how to engage students. They CAN read, they just don’t want to read the stupid shit teachers force them to read. Basically, they have selective literacy. The selection being what is relevant to them.

There's plenty in the world to engage with. The issue is people don't want to engage with it, because the world they are accustomed to is one of such convenience that any action requiring effort is becoming increasingly unpalatable. And what truly has been lost has in part been lost because of what I describe: cultural relics of the past bastardize themselves to fit the current paradigm (e.g. priests doing tiktok dances) or die out entirely. Those that try to accomodate usually fail to compete against the slop, and in the process lose the genuine appeal they once had.

The point is the issue is not a matter of curriculum but what society values. If society would rather spend their time looking at a phone all day then the degradation of education (and culture, literature, art, etc.) is a forgone conclusion.

Chiggas yes. Indians maybe. Indians have a lower average IQ compared to my country. So the average Indian probably not. But because they are so many the probably have more smart people in absolute numbers.

But that wasn't my point. In my country there are a number of (normal) schools in which the larger part doesn't even speak the language of my country. Those immigrants have only been here for a few years or are born here, but their parents don't speak that language either. So they didn't grow up learning it "naturally".
Its obvious that the literacy rate is declining if you put the schools full of people that don't speak the language that is getting tested in all the literacy tests.

If I would become a few years younger and would be thrown into a school in India, of course the average literacy rate of that class would decline. I don't speak Indian.

Offer "free" remedial tutoring and academic extracurricular help (think something like homework club) for students that are falling behind reasonable standards.

Was for a while a state by state or district by district thing until common core which made it federally mandatory country wide.

Thankfully my mom taught me phonics before I even started preschool so had a decent head start compared to government mandated retardation.

Could you maybe provide a name of that individual or the name of his theory or links to actual education studies about the theory? I have a hunch that your incredible generalization and lack of specificity means you’re lying.

Rude. Our disagreement is that phones are not fun and nobody likes doing phone slop. It's not entertaining, it's only pretending to be because it fills the void but it's so easy to walk away from when you have something meaningful going on, everything meaningful is being carved away. If anyone had anything better to do they would be, but they don't. Take everybody offline, & we are still living in rat fucker shit world that will drive people to drink, drugs, suicide, hookups, gambling, sleep all day, fuse yourself to a horse and learn to sing beautiful music and you won't be doing any of that because your life will be fantastic.

Fascinating. I grew up and learned to read in a state that stopped using whole language model very early on. I know of no one that learned to read through that method. I feel bad for those folks that had to learn to read with that model.

have you ever even seen a child? if you think that the children would not start whispering to each other within seconds of entering the room (or after entreating them to be quiet for the fortieth time), you are very stupid indeed

You are such a fucking moron. I've been able to right click a word anywhere on my screen and select Look up "word" for more than 20 years. And the only reason i stop then is because i wasnt alive.

I even remember having leapfrog books that did this when i was like 5.

Ok
>Inquiry based learning reforms (incentivize public discussions on learning material)
>interdisciplinary learning (less categorized and differentiated subjects, mix topics together in one class / project)
>Project based learning (have students write more long term essays, more science crafts, ect)
>encourage sped up programs for advanced students
>smaller class sizes per teacher
>longer blocks of classes with less total classes
>deemphasize standardized tests
>re emphasize one on one tutoring and student to student performance assessments
>integrate technology like kahnacademy and other internet learning sources
>limit punitive punishments like detention and suspension
>increase directly practical subjects like financial literacy, digital literacy, media literacy, drivers ed, home repair, possibly car repair, taxes, ect, ect

Meanwhile look at the responses here
>SEGREGATE BLACKS
>SEGREGATE LOW IQ PEOPLE

fire all teachers. double the salaries for their positions. hire new teachers based on three factors:
1. performance on a test similar to the pre-1994 SAT
2. no criminal record
3. no education degree
you can have no degree or literally any other degree, but education degrees are banned.
we could talk about specific changes like going back to phonics, but ultimately the problem is the accumulated mass of anti-knowledge produced and spread by education departments at universities. breaking their power is the important thing.

in hindsight it's actually very funny that it wasn't an east Asian ESL teacher who implemented this. like there is no excuse for a native English speaker to have ever come up with this pedagogical theory

their hostility goes back to the civil rights era, particularly the forced desegregation of schools and bussing (forced integration). the entire private school/charter school movement goes back to this conflict and can't be understood outside of this context.

Nearly every issue in modern America goes back to race in some way
