when reading a translated epic, see if the translator as written any poetry of their own that you like. ignore prose translations. they may be accurate, but who cares? you're reading a POEM. poems are cool because they are not prose, simple as.

Any thoughts on Verity? I like Oxford Worldโ€™s Classics and they seem to have good translations generally but everyone says to go with Fagles for Homer.

LOL I literally just came to /lit/ to make this thread. Good shit
I'm looking mostly for accuracy and a decent amount of explanatory notes, so far the Emily Wilson one looks the most promising imo

I just compared this to Fagles and Lattimore on this website >>24569079
And Johnston is better than all of them because it is clearer, while not lacking anything that the others have.
Even Wilson would be better than them if it wasn't for the My Little Pony names.

Pope's is the most well-written, but for a first read I'd suggest Fagles. If you end up loving the work, which I hope you do, then on your eventual reread is for when I'd recommend Pope's.

It's not the easiest read though, which is why I'd only recommend it on rereads and for serious fans of poetry, as opposed to someone who is solely looking for the best way to read and enjoy Homer.

Plato included a ban on homosexuality in his Laws. He also accuses the Cretans of distorting myth to justify their pederasty
>>24574057
mind that there is no mention of pederasty in the IIlad or the Odyssey. The whole homosexual thing was an Archaic Greek invention, and it was in this culture that they viewed the works of Homer. Thus they held them to be alike in their debaucheries. The fact is that Achilles and Patroclus were dear friends from a very young age.
Besides, if he was homo why would he want to keep women for himself?

Why do you campaign so hard to try to twist Achilles into being a homosexual? The whole cause of Achillesโ€™ conflict in the story was him having his bitch taken. Him and Patroclus were both fucking hoes in their tents throughout the entire story. You revisionist faggots are insufferable.

I've not read the rest but the first lines from this Wilson hoe are almost parodically awful.

"Tell me about a complicated man.
Muse, tell me how he wandered and was lost
when he had wrecked the holy town of Troy, "

Why on earth has the sense of poetic language totally disappeared from modern writers.

Second Pope. It's just enjoyable, he paints up such a vivid landscape of the mind that's more precise than prose could ever be. Either read it in the original, or read Pope. It was meant to be a poem.
