we had to read Hatchet, The Outsiders, The Pigman, and The Chrysalids and I did not care for any of them.

I had already read this book when our sixth grade English teacher assigned this for reading.
We were having a class discussion and she asked how he could start a fire. I eventually raised my hand and said he could use his hatchet and strike a rock to make sparks.
She got upset that I spoiled it for the rest of the class.

I enjoyed the book and read a couple of the sequels and a few others by Gary Paulsen.
