Is this thing a meme? I feel like it would actually help me read the Bible from cover-to-cover if it was presented more like a traditional book without all the verse numbers and references and other shit.

All that stuff is there for your convenience. The organization is pretty important. Either go full King James if you care about literary significance, or NRSVue if you just want a decent, clear understanding of the meaning/context of the scripture.
