Are there any novels/stories that are not masturbatory (Joyce, Nabokov) and self indulgent; and leans more into story, almost mythical, narratives (Dostoevksy). Not too pulpy.

Honestly Proust. Beyond the first volume, the prose significantly reduces its complexity.

Alex and Mia were known to three of the girls and the fourth hardly spoke Argentinian Spanish but conversed with me in English while the others handled what seemed to be Argentinian affairs. I took the picture with no focal point in mind but in retrospect I favored the one with whom I shared my own language most, naturally. I myself didn't even chance a meeting with Alex or Mia, having primary duties rear of the party and a point of contact with the host, a baker who didn't fully explain the whole time why I should have been there. It was a whirlwind brought him around an outer ring of Bueno Aires suburb that I had invested a few miles of foot traffic in and he said I could wear what I had on, and I stepped into the wind easily enough as sometimes I can. For some I suppose it was a wedding and for others a party and for me it was four girls in a photograph and not too much more. These other photographs are from the zoo and I think some from the airport.
