>>24573828 (OP)Read Arabian Sands and Marsh Arabs. His writing felt very authentic and only briefly homosexual. I think I actually liked Marsh Arabs more, even though his frequent attempts to penetrate Oman were quite amusing.
If you like Thesiger but find he is not racist enough to your liking, his (sort of) predecessor L.M. Nesbitt's exploration of Danakil, Abyssinia might suit you more. Nesbitt, to me, represented the iconic European explorer. A sense of superiority in a sun helmet, Thesiger is much more respectable to his native hosts and more willing to comprehend their ways of life, living as similarly to them as he could during his travels. He also occasionally rips on suburbs which I found relatable.
And in general, if you are exploring travelogues I do not recommend anything later than the 1950s. Thesiger got in right on the cusp of industrialization hitting Arabia.
