As much as I love Moby Dick, I haven't read enough of Melville's other works to choose him in good conscience, so I'll go with Kazuo Ishiguro because I've read all eight of his novels. As for his best work, I'm split between Remains of the Day (for its masterful unveiling of Stevens' thoughts under his stoic shell) and The Unconsoled (for its unsettling dream logic).
