Dhammapada is probably the first book you should start with if you know literally nothing about Buddhism or the Dharma. Its the oldest of the Pali Canon texts and is used in some form in virtually all schools of Buddhism

After that the Lotus Sutra and Diamond Sutra are valuable if you want to learn more about Mahayana
