if you think about it, Shakespeare has three plays that are basically a triptych of the life of a man.

Hamlet is a young man's story.
Macbeth is a middle-aged man's story.
King Lear is an old man's story.

Where are you in your journey through life, /lit/, and which of the three--Hamlet, Macbeth, or Lear--speaks to you the most?

>Macbeth is a middle-aged man's story.
Rather bizarre statement. Did you murder enough people to become desensitized to it and borderline on madness as a result?

But seriously speaking, Shakespeare so routinely covers almost every facet of human existence that any number of 'triptychs' like this could be created. Replace Hamlet with Prince Hal, Macbeth with Othello and Lear with Prospero. Shake it up and you get just another equally valid combination, because Shakespeare always has multiple instances of a universal subject in his plays.

Out of curiosity, were there any contemporaries of Shakespeare who hated him or at least were critical of his work?

The Duke is probably middle aged. He's attained maximum maturity and wisdom.
