98% of people who get published or have their art shown somewhere are doing something any random aspiring writer or art major could do, but skipping the crucial first step of "actually getting organically noticed," which is 98% of the difficulty of going from aspiring writer/artist to writer/artist. The remaining 2% is just continuing to churn shit out, that's the easy part because now when you go to a publisher or gallery you already have a portfolio and they will shrug and say "I presume this is fine, sure, we'll publish you."

Layer this on itself for a few years and you have a portfolio. This is the backstory of nearly all major writers and artists in the last century. New York Jews originally used the technique for themselves, in the early century, but then it caught on generally and is now the only way to do anything in America. American culture is made entirely out of nepotism networks.

Date a rich Jewish girl from New York some time, if you randomly mention you have an invention for an automatic ass-scratcher she'll tell you she can introduce you to another Jew she knows through another Jew who could finance it, and you can bypass the usual channels that normalplebs have to go through to get a meeting with him because she'll just get you an informal in person one. I'm just glad someone is translating literature that matches my taste and which I otherwise would never get to read. You can be annoyed by Deep Vellum's promotional effort, but at the end of the day the market is still inundated in NYT pulp. At least they're doing something different. If you think you can do better, then do it. Otherwise, this is an entirely pointless fixation and you should try touching some grass. He makes mistakes, but some of OP's issues are more stylistic than real issues with the syntax. He works with editors who are native to the languages he translates and with the authors of the books. It's been a while since I've read them but take for instance this small example. "He leído". No Spanish speaker would say this because it sounds unnatural. It means "I've read" (who says that?). "Hey, here's this book by so and so" "I've read". It sounds weird even in English.

What he means is probably "Lo he leído", which means "I've read it". A small word but it makes a difference between a natural and a fake.

I'm not prepared to condemn the man's entire effort because of some self-acknowledged flubs in his first major translation that he worked on 3-4 years ago without the support he has for Schattenfroh and which is getting reprinted with corrections without prompting by the mob OP is trying to whip up. As long as he's open to course correction and constantly working to improve I don't see the issue. Everyone is going to have a different perspective on how to best capture Sorokin or Celine in English. It's a noble endeavor worthy of support.
