It is funny. It's just sad that it became reddit.

The idea that cricket is the most dangerous game in the universe but got seeded onto earth as a boring ball game is hilarious.

Currently re-reading the collected volume rn as a nostalgic light read alongside my main book(s).
A lot of it holds up, Adams really knew how to fit jokes into a sci-fi plot in a way that doesn't detract from either.

I enjoyed it as a kid, but thought it fell off near the end of the series. I literally couldn't finish it as an adult attempting a reread last year.

It’s silly and fun. A good book for young people, maybe teenage readers or young adults. It’s not particularly profound, but it’s not bad either. It’s dry and British and quaint while being massive and far-reaching in scope, which is a fun dichotomy at play.
Idk it’s not bad at all, but its cultural impact was sadly a net-negative because it struck too deep a chord in the midwit mind. I think, though, for every Reddit asshole spawned by this book, there are probably multiple readers who were influenced in positive ways to read more or study more about the universe and not be a complete pseud about it. Maybe that’s just optimistic though.
Personally I read it at like 27 (last year) and it had 0 impact on me

I could never memorize which of 6x9 and 7x8 are 54 or 56. Aced my country's equivalent of math SAT (100%), 10 years later still can't multiply 7 by 8. Why is brain like that?

The first one (Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency) is not that good. The second one (Long Dark Tea-Time Of The Soul) is better but still not great.

His best work in my opinion is ‘Last Chance To See’, which is a non-fiction book about a trip round the world looking for some of the most endangered species of animals. (Several have since gone extinct.)

It's all right.

Hating it is taking it too seriously. But elevating it to a minor religion is going much too far the other way.

It's one of those books that is probably worth reading once (in your teens) but doesn't really demand to be looked at again.

It is funny. British humor is fantastic. I love Douglas Adams, I love Terry Pratchett. I will not pretend to dislike something just because people who I do dislike also like it. I am not defined by my tastes in media and I am even less defined by whoever shares the same tastes as me.

The comedy is very dated. It makes you feel bad for Douglas. It could have been far better writtten, too.
