I just finished The Sorcerer's Stone for the first time. I absolutely adore the world-building and characters. I couldn't care less about the plot 'cos I was just enjoying the atmosphere. The centaurs were a step too much, though. Is Chamber of Secrets any good?

What was wrong with the centaurs? The 2nd and third book are pretty similar to the first one.

Chamber of Secrets is probably the only Harry Potter book I actually admire. A lot of the later books don't have the comfy atmosphere but Chamber of Secrets has both the atmosphere of Sorcerer's Stone and a kind of high stakes higher than Goosebumps spookiness

To be brutally honest, if you're just checking out and reading the HP books for fun, which is what it sounds like, thats totally fine, I think theyre trash but whatever
The decline in quality after book 3 is stunning, even as a kid I was blown away by how drawn out and flat everything got with Goblet of Fire, it was so bad I pretty much gave up on the franchise until I was in my 20s and went back to read the last 3 just for shits and giggles

The sex scenes are extremely over rated. I mean Snape having flash backs to getting molested by dumbledore fine. But Hermione have to "enchant" the three headed dog? No completely took my out of it. Btw Prisoner of Azkebahn is fine. Goblet of fire is fine. Order of the phoenix is okay. Half blood prince I found unfinishable. Look she's fucking overrated.

Our teacher read this to us when it was new when I was in middle school. It was fine, just seemed like another book to me at the time. Then a few years later is was a fad. I am always surprised that people are still into it. I suspect, but am not sure: Is the fandom held up by old people, or are new people coming in at a sustainable rate?

The original potterheads, those that grew up with Harry as the books released, are in their thirties. It's their money that keeps the thing alive. They try to get their children into it but it won't affect them the same way.

Inevitable really. I wonder if that scene had any effect on the later romance triangle subplot with Ron and Hagrid.

Harry stiffened as he forced the last of the polyjiuce potion into malfoys mouth.
As malfoy transformed into a perfect likeness of Pancy Parkinson he squirmed sobbed trying to get away from Harry.
"Call my mother a mudblood again 'Pancy' and I'll have more to shove down your throat than a potion". Said Harry holding malfoys naked quivering body, barley in control of himself.

That's why I'd recomend Chrestomanci over Harry Potter, I think what people like from HP is how "whimsy" and "british" I can see where they are coming from but DWJ does that and better.

Itโ€™s wild to me how much the faggots seethe about this series on here as if they arenโ€™t written for 6th graders. As far as YA goes there only better faire is the first few Artemis fowl books.

I guess, Chrestomanci Castle too has a boarding school aspect to it but I get what you mean, I also think HP is sort of more franchise friendly, make of that what you will.
>>24579945
Later books, sure, but I'd argue the series as a whole is targeting slightly younger kids, the first couple books do come across as the type of books parents are meant to read to their children, children about to or just learning how to read so essentially pre-schoolers.

I tried getting into it as a kid/teen as it was coming out. Outside of the world building, I couldn't get into it, so I dropped it after the third. I read the whole series a couple years ago. It was mid, though I'm glad I actually finished it
