How can I improve the legibility of my handwriting? I've got total chicken scratch, but I don't even know how to improve as an adult.

I just hate writing things and I wanna improve at it.

Practice writing neatly, one alphabet at a time. Tbh it’s your parents/teachers fault for not teaching/practicing handwriting, it’s not a thing in the US education system.

Not ap but I've been taught cursive a shit ton and it has always looked better than my print which my teachers used to say they can barely read.

pick a letterform you like and practice.

Spencerian copybooks on Amazon. $25 last time I ordered them and will set you up for beautiful, readable cursive as long as you practice and study consistently.

Pencil will give you more options (ballpoints are aids). If you are more deliberate about making flowing motions into adjacent letters, you'll stumble on combinations and chunks that look good.

my letters constantly vary in size even when I'm trying to be aware of them

I started with drawing all strokes from top to bottom I think it's helping

my handwritting is on par with that of dostoyevsky and shakespeare.
