How can I justify learning German and French? It seems like such a waste of time...

Realistically it'd take 1+ hour a day for 2-3 years to be able to, let's say, read Goethe in German? Then for fluently speaking it, even more?

I get the point of learning it in 1800, where tech could not translate it for you and you didn't have translated copies of everything. But what's the point of learning it now? Considering I'll have to take time off from something productive to do it

You can't. Language learning is always a pain in the ass and it just gets harder. If you can't enthuse yourself to do it then don't even bother. Even worse you would waste increasing amounts of time only to give up like everybody who LARPs as a language learner and then you lost hundreds of hours on nothing.

Those are like the top two best ones for an English speaker to learn. You gain access to large numbers of classic original literary and philosophical texts, and lots of relevant scientific works too. But most importantly, you can pull French out randomly here and there to impress women/draw them in, then once you've been with each other for a bit you can start busting out some German in her ear when you're angryfucking her.

If you can't be bothered to learn either German or French then you really don't have any interest in learning any relevant foreign language at all.

It’s a complete waste of time if you’re reading novels and philosophy. Not much is lost in translation, basically nothing if you read the notes.

You do it because you feel like you'd enjoy doing it, that it'd be rewarding
For me it's an addictive and very fun hobby
