Anyone read his Homer? After reading Pope's Iliad, and disliking Chapman's Odyssey, from what I saw from the first book, I'm debating to read Cowper's.
Are we supposed to know who the fuck this guy is by the portrait?
>>24580426 (OP)Surely you read Chapman's Iliad, right? By the way, Cowper was criticised by the Romantics for his 'un-Homeric Miltonism' but Chapman was praised, not for his accuracy of Homer, but for his possession of those poetic virtues which were an English equivalent to those possessed by Homer.
Yes, but make sure it's the second edition which is less stilted and "Miltonic".
>>24580531Is the first edition even available
>>24580941The first edition is on gutenberg. Here is the second (third actually, but the same revision): https://www.google.com/books/edition/The_Iliad_and_Odyssey_and_The_battle_of/udQIAAAAQAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=0
The second volume and both volumes of the Odyssey are on that page under "Other editions".
>>24580954Two versions of Iliad and one of Odyssey?
>>24580971He revised both for the second edition. The revised versions are what I linked.
I have a full set of Cooper, but I never touched any of his Latin translations. I gravitate towards his later stuff, after he grew mad.
His fables are also excellent. Not quite as good as Gay, but you could see the inspiration.
BTW David Cecil's biography, while a little fanciful, is really quite good, and very evocative. It probably doesn't stand up to scholarship but it feels right if you know what I mean.
