After writing off the Hunger Games as just another YA romance trilogy when I was younger. I got into reading it recently and really enjoyed all 3 books. Will probably read the two prequels later

Surprisingly dark and mature themes tackled, even if the harsher details of stuff is only implied than outright shown. Teenagers being she’s trafficked if they’re an attractive victor was particularly shocking.

Any other genuinely good YA fiction?

Also I’ll add that while the advertising always seemed to push some love triangle narrative like twilight, in the books and I assume the movies this doesn’t exist at all really. The love story feels fairly layered and complex

Red Rising. The first three books are generally considered YA. The first one especially has just plain old blood games later on.

It veers into darker more adult territory later on though.

>Hatchet
>The Girl who Circumnavigated Faery land
>Diana Wynne Jones's The Dark Lord of Dirkholm
That's what I think of when I think of well-written YA

First book would have been good if the author read more lit. It reads like a screenplay more than a novel. The rest are unmentionable like the Dune sequels.
