I'm Mexican, heavy into German philosophy - pretty much everyone from Leibniz to Husserl. Wrote thesis on Kant and Husserl.
I really thought I had an affinity with 19th century Germany. And I'll tell you - I did not understand Faust one bit.
I was also into Jung, who spoke of how naturally resonant Faust was with all Germans. I was deeply disappointed. To some extent I'm sure it helps to have prior awareness of the folk tale. But it is also supposed to mean something about modernity - "the Faustian Age," right?
The prose was nice but the whole time I was just thinking that this guy's an asshole and his motives are ridiculous. You sold your soul to seduce a woman? Of all the things
So I'm not German. But we can gatekeep the genre of magical realism I suppose - that remains strangely inaccessible to the lighter shades
