>Plot Summary: Martin Eden, a working-class sailor, feels alienated from both his rough origins and the refined world of Ruth Morse, a woman he loves. Through self-education and determination, he becomes a successful writer, amassing wealth and fame. However, his alienation deepens as he finds the literary world shallow, leading to disillusionment.
>Why It Resonates: Martinโ€™s relentless pursuit of success through individual effort appeals to loners who seek to overcome their outsider status through achievement.

Anyone read Star Rover by London?

I read it a long time ago, partly because I enjoyed Jack London's other work and also because it's mentioned in Nabokov's novel Pnin. As far as I remember it is similar to a lot of books in the sense that there are a few really meaningful, relatable and profound sentences in a plot which is, as far as I remember, basically about a hugely ambitious seething loner type whose stories are rejected countless times before he makes it, with the female character (who I think he rescues at the start of the book) and her family playing a kind of consistent role as his social status improves. He kills himself at the end, but I don't remember why. There are some novels which are written in a style and during a period which for some reason or other just don't really touch me very deeply and are frankly quite boring overall. Compare that to a more modern writer and I enjoy modern prose much more, probably because the setting etc is more relatable. It was okay, and was relatable when I was a seething ambitious young man.

I provided a declarative statement that clearly expresses my subjective opinion on the book. So what do you think? Did I read it? Did I like it?
