I mostly just study vocab on Anki and do lots of comprehensible input (previously Peppa Pig type shows, now localized Skyrim, weil ich verbessere) supplemented with free games like Duolingo and Drops.

I think this is a big problem for foreigners here I Germany, to be honest. My sister's boyfriend is Irish, and he's been living here for 4 years, and still he's not really fluent in German. It is just top convenient for us to switch to English, and by that hinder the progress of learning

I'd start a course. I suggest the Pimsleur method, but any beginners German course will do. Now you read German news, poetry, children's books, you watch German films and television, you listen to German radio, to German music, German podcasts, etc.

Also find some Germans to talk to online. Live chat would be good, too. Find a gaming buddy and practice your German with them. Use Google Translate a lot.

Reading in your TL is the most effective way to learn a language in terms of vocabulary and grammar acquisition, nothing else compares
The trouble is getting to the point where you can read, even if very slowly, in your TL
Imo you should get German for Reading by Karl Sandberg, use anki and yomitan
