I just finished reading the first book in this series. It's the first time I've read about a civilisation were the smallest unit has no soul or individuality at all. All other stories I've read or watched, regardless of genre, have had individuals that go through doubt, regret and many other things along the way.

I have read about other real life contacts with them, where the author often has insight into how inhumane and strange their society is due to their lack of individuality and self awareness. I recognized the themes, such as how the three red guards had no remorse and just kept repeating how the past is the past. In the first few pages of the book. there was a list of character names (ding dong ching chu and things like that) but I think that was a mistake, because it tricked the reading into looking for individuality that just wasn't there.

The book also had a bunch of stuff about aliens, but I didn't pay much attention to it since it was much more interesting to read about how weird and screwed up the Chinese are. They murder each other in the most brutal ways for having thought the wrong thought.

What is there to appreciate about a people who has no humanity? The whole book was about the same kinds of people as that guy in China who drove a van and accidentally ran over a little girl, then decided to just keep running over her and then leave like nothing had happened. That Chinese man slept just as well that night as any other night, because nothing that affected him had happened.

My favorite character was that Chinese officer who over the course of his career builds up a persona as an optimistic โ€œwe can beat the aliens!โ€ Go getter, but was secretly pessimistic about humanityโ€™s chances and used his credibility as an optimist to set up a plan to hijack several of Earths ships to send them as far away from the conflict zone. He ensure humanityโ€™s survival. Pure kino character.

That whole being responsible for lifetime healthcare payments after the situation was instituted by Chinese people because of how they are.

The people in charge made such laws so that the state wouldn't have to be burdened by anything, and the outcome (that people would rather kill someone who is injured) is welcomed.

It's basically the same thing as when wasps get intoxicated by something in nature, and when they return to the hive, the other wasps tear the intoxicated wasp limb by limb because the hive doesn't want to deal with one of it's members not being a 100 % good worker.

You blaming Chinese behavior on laws is just circular, because it was Chinese people who made the laws, saw the consequences of said laws, then decided to keep said laws.

You objected to my factual statement by giving a reason why Chinese people had such abhorrable behavior. The fact of the matter is that the reason why a Chinese person would run over a little girl and then keep driving over her is that he is Chinese, and because he is Chinese he doesn't care one bit about a person he doesn't know.

It's the same as a gypsy that steals. People will say he steals because others will not give him a job, or do legitimate business with him, but the fact of the matter is that he steals because he is a gypsy.

You are a cuckold who is trying to find excuses for the behaviors of other ethnic groups.

Exactly. No excuse should be made for the behavior of Chinese people other than the excuse that they are Chinese, and that is just how Chinese people are.

That guy brought up the law in China as an excuse for their behavior. The fact is that in many western countries you can also be held accountable for someone else's medical bills if you run them over, and there isn't an epidemic of people just running over others and pretending like nothing happened, like they have in China.

Also, no western person would publicly execute people and them have no shame about it years later and just say "the past is the past".

All of the main characters posses only bad traits (cowardly, can't stand up for what is right, treats people who are beneath them incredibly bad). The character development is basically that some teenagers gets a bit of power and they use it to murder adults (the color revolution, which was incredibly boring to read). then some time pass and Ye Wenjie gets a bit of power so she decides to murder the whole world. Even the one important western person in the book, Mike Evans, is a just a one dimensional dipshit who tries to invent some sort of new communism involving animals that doesn't make any sense, then proceeds to act completely against his own ideas.

The main plot is ripped from Harry Turtledove's Worldwar: In the Balance with a bunch of technobabble sprinkled in. The nanowire that sliced through the ship was incredibly silly and wouldn't have worked. The only reason why such things were included was that Cixin Liu had read about them in western science fiction.

The only somewhat relatable character in the book was Shi Qiang, but such characters are much better written in western literature.

Also, my thread is the most interesting on /lit/ for weeks. All people like you do is to post about how great things are because you lack any critical thinking. You're the kind of person who thinks Rick and Morty is some profound work of art with deeper meaning.

The worst book I've ever read, worse than the first. It probably could have made an ok-ish short story, though. The most interesting thing about it were the projections and the constant seething about the West. Like how Bin Laden managed to fool the US for decades, because of their moronic bureaucracy, or subalterns behaving like completely spineless lackeys, just like in the East, or the whole idea of a sect that just wants to destroy the world out of spite. There's so much seethe it's unreal. Are the Chinese really like this?

It's my favourite sci-fi book series ever. I haven't read many but I like what I like. Mind-blowing stuff. enjoy it. I won't discuss it further for spoiler's sake but I saw it all as being planned steps and steps, centuries, in advance. The way the author articulates this is very well made. Also the abstractions and metaphors used in places to explain certain concepts are brilliant. I will concede that the ending is weird but I still followed along and I pictured it in my head well.

Avoid the TV show.

Yes the Chinese are very different from us, it's to be expected. But Ye Wenjie isn't lacking in self awareness, she just thinks that all of humanity is a soulless bug race like the Chinese, which is why she broadcasts the message.

Luo Ji is also an excellent character (the tv show turned him into a fucking nigger) that has deep internal conflict and self awareness whilst being a wallfacer. It's funny that most liberal peoples main gripe with the book is that the book is "sexist" for having everything Luo Jio creates ruined by some dumb bitch. (Who unfortunately goes on to be a main character. Constantly fucking things up for humanity.)

>>24591952
Great character, totally bulldozes OP's argument, that everyone is lacking in self awareness and individuality.

It's a good scifi book series, better than most of the slop and meme books that are posted here. It's a shame so many are filtered because the book has Chinese characters, thinking Chinese thoughts, doing Chinese things. It's different and scary to you, i get it!

Yeah, that's it. You got it. Have you ever been commended for your wit? Your lucidity? No? Alright...

Seriously, though, the only remarkable thing about the book is that it is Chinese. Unfortunately, that means soullessness, resentment and a pronounced inferiority complex. I was genuinely hoping for an alien and proud culture, but alas I only found garbage. I wonder whether it's because Liu's a bugman, Mao's legacy, or it was always like this. I also can't name any book that is as unnecessarily long as The Dark Forest.

What I liked about the story was the believable progression of public opinion and fervor. How the children of the people who actually experienced the Trisolarans message wont actually believe as much. How disastrous picking the wrong research direction could be. I loved the concept of sending commissars with the urgency fresh in their mind sent into the future to whip the younguns into line.
Imagine if we could do that in the real world. If people could be elected to go to the future as guaranteed leaders/ advisors

How does one Chinese character disprove that their people are bugmen? Like you say yourself, Ye Wenjie's motivation for betraying mankind is that she thinks she Chinese are all bugmen, and that all other people must be as well. A person like that would just move to a western country.

I am not saying that every single person born with Chinese DNA lacks a consciousness and have the bug-mentality. I am saying that as a whole China is a country of bugmen, and anything that strays from that mentality gets shut down. Nearly every single Chinese person however, both is a bugman, wants to be one, and will actively search out none bugmen and destroy them, which was the whole point of the color revolution, both in the book and in real life.

The thing is that after China became more free, the culture of bug-like behavior still remained. Russia also have a similar culture. When the USSR fell, many people thought it would mean that Russia became democratic, but the opposite happened.

The average Russian, or Chinese, does not think they can affect how things are in their society, so they just do what is expected of them. Reading this book just made me realize how true this is.

The author obviously hold his own country and culture in high regard, as other people have pointed out in this thread, but all of the characters still have only negative traits. Shi Qiang is the only one that comes close to being a likable character in the first book.

People have mocked the Netflix series as bad, but it corrects some of the issues with the books by introducing characters with good traits such as Liam Cunningham's Thomas Wade.

Russians (and most east-europeans) do not grasp the idea of them being in charge of their own faith, which is the core of having no soul. They think of themselves as cogs in a machine they have no control over.

Always unbelievable to see the heights of bigotry that anons, supposedly well-read anons, are capable of. All sense of cognitive subtlety falls to the floor when they pass judgement over of a foreign nation. China holds a billion and a half people. There are people there just like you.

At the very least, they have more control over their fate because, unlike you, they have fewer illusions about the machine. Dissidents in the east during communism risked far more than dissidents in the west during cancel culture, yet there were far fewer of latter. Now, most of the West just sits back and watches as their countries turn into third world shitholes and does nothing. But that's only part of the issue - look at the Russian cultural achievements - even during the soviet union (in some fields), and tell me that you can achieve that without a soul.

You said it was a book about Chinese characters without the capacity to engage in conscious thought, moral/personal introspection and reasoning.

I point out 3 Chinese characters that do, so the goal posts move and you go on about them as a race of bugmen as a whole, which basically just boils down to, "i didn't like these books because they were Chinese".

Also i think the point of the color revolution in the books was to answer the question "How could Ye Wenjie think so little of humanity as to invite it's destruction?"

To clarify, a bugman can have the illusion of being in charge of his own fate in the contemporary western system. You are special, just like everyone else, but producing great art cannot be faked. You absolutely need a soul for that.

I dislike this series because Alpha Centauri is not a three-body system as described in the book.

Alpha Centauri A and B orbit each other in an eliptical but stable way, ranging from about 11.2 to 35.6 AU from each other. Proxima Centauri, meanwhile, orbits A and B at a distance of 13,000 AU. One-fifth of a light year. It takes Proxima 500,000 years to orbit A and B, or in other words one complete orbit of Proxima and around A and B hasn't happened in the entire span of our species' existence, given that h. sapiens is only about 300,000 years old. Proxima is so distant from A and B, in fact, that from the perspective of Earth it appears to be four entire lunar diameters away from Alpha Centauri - if you didn't know any better, you'd think it was in an entirely different part of the galaxy.

None of this is new information. We've known most of this for the better part of a century now; Cixin Liu certainly had access to all this information when he started writing in 2008 or whenever this book was written. One trip to pretty much ANY website describing the Alpha Centauri system would've given him the basic rundown.

It really just bothers me that Liu wrote this entire seemingly hard sci-fi series, but also just completely restructured Alpha Centauri to do so, all so that his Triloarans could evolve and behave a certain way. Why not just have them come from a trinary star system about which less is known? It's not like the galaxy is lacking in them. 91 Aquarii, perhaps, or Algol.

Only the time frame. The Trisolarians could reach 10 % of the speed of light, but it took a lot of time to accelerate and decelerate, which meant it would take around 450 years for them to reach us.

If they lived further away it would just take longer. If their plan to stop scientific advancement worked it wouldn't matter if it took 450 or 2450 years to get to us.

Im in the middle of death's end, and my favorite so far was the dark forest. Luo ji is the GOAT, i imagined him like pic related like, and i wasnt so far off considering all the fanart

I feel like the first book was more about events and characters, but dark forest went more into a timeline-like book more than a story, i dont know how to explain it, but it feels like the order of the events and what led to what is more important than what happened to the characters.

As you can see from the pictures I am 100 % white. I am ethnically Swedish. I only posted the pictures because some guy accused me of being an Indian that had something against Chinese people. As you can see, I am very much not Indian.
