Both were good, but not incredible. The Evenings I think I found more interesting; it's about youths in the Netherlands post-WWII. Confession felt like the author was secretly addressing me directly, and it'd probably do the same for a lot of the insecure people on here; it's about a guy who killed his wife.

It has a story structured similar to/inspired by Brontë's Wuthering Heights. It tells the story of an author who wrote a supposed pinnacle of classic literature and spans roughly eleven chapters with narrators who all have their own connection to the author or her work. I've suggested it because I have seldomly read prose in Dutch written like that -- it has an intricately weaved storyline and captivating dialogues, and better than pic related, although Japin's book has some good dialogue, too.

Netherlands has one of the highest counts of good writers per capita in the world. It obviously can’t compare to France or Germany in the total amount (because it’s a smaller country, duh) but I bet that OP couldn’t name as many French or German writers as there have been named Dutch writers in this thread anyways.
