Which Redwall books are worth reading? I'd rather not read all 22 just to find out.

I'm at book 8 now and I found all so far "fine" for kids but as an adult reader I'm more amazed how it's the same story with the same kinds of villains every single book.

Feather stood atop the great wall of the abbey and Good Goodly approached his friend cautiously.

"Look at them, Good," said Feather, gesturing with a quivering paw at the vermin which were probably living somewhere in Mossflower even if they hadn't made any trouble in over a decade. "Not a peep from them in years, but you know their black souls will drive them to attack our fair abbey once again."

"Nothing to be done but wait, I suppose," replied Good, his bushy tail standing a great salute behind him.

"No, there is…another way." said Feather. "Do you remember, Good? Do you remember long ago…in the cave…what we did?"

"That was…" said Good in a shaky voice. "That was nothing. I remember nothing."

"Martin the Warrior came to me in a dream," said Feather. "He gave me eight riddles to solve, and after doing some anagrams and solving a crossword puzzle that was carved into a hidden corner of the abbey long ago, I realized he was proposing an idea to me. A, let us say, 'Final Answer' to the vermin problem."

Just read them in chronological order, that way you'll read books like Martin the Warrior sooner.

From memory, the standouts for me were Redwall, Mossflower, Martin the Warrior, Outcast of Redwall, Marlfox, and Lord Brocktree

It is a little disappointing that every individual of the 'vermin' species is always invariably evil. Not only is it predictable, but it means we don't get cute rat or ferret MCs.

I never read past Marlfox but remember thoroughly enjoying the early books. Cheers!

Unrelated continuation, but I dressed up as Marlfox for that Halloween. Terrible costume. My last Halloween as a participant. Idk if that had anything to do with not continuing the series. Not a furry btw

For some reason, Taggergung is one of the lesser known ones that always sticks out for me. I think it was because I always loved otters and he had a sweet knife in it. Love some Salamandastron books with the Long Patrol and Badgers in them also. I need to re-read a few of them. I usually read one or two a year for nostalgia's sake.

Mariel of Redwall is the best book by far because the insane rat pirate kings and their bloodthirsty mob is an epicness that lends itself well to the fantastical setting.

Lord Brocktree was a favorite of mine growing up.

Honestly, though, keep in mind these are kids' books, so don't go in expecting Tolstoy or Dickens. I guess if you haven't read a book since high school and need to get back into reading, though, they're a good way to start. Way better than some alternatives.
