To the top of my list it goes!
It's fantastic. While I agree with the anti-communist political message, I think it made for a poorer book at the end. The rest, again, is fantastic. The humor and drama is second to none.

no, that's Virgina Woolf's Orlando. Orlando Furioso is about killing African invaders and witches and dragons.

TOAFK is a moderate liberal anti-war book of the type that was fashionable among Tolkien and Lewis. The parable of the ants is a reaction against any kind of state control, which is why it's contrasted with the freedom-loving geese.

He goes on a no-borders libertarian rant in the last post-humous book. It's the worst part, just Merlin lecturing for 50 pages, spelling out all of the lessons he gave Arthur and effectively ruining any magic. Dropped it halfway through. The first 4 books are great though.

My favorite book. There are somewhat jarring tonal shifts after the first two books, but they only add to the ultimate kino. There is a particularly beautiful passage near the end about the end of Arthur's peace that is nowhere surpassed when it comes to the whole mythology and Arthur story.
No need to read The Book of Merlin, which an anon above referenced (published separately). The ants/geese message stories are incorporated into the first book of the version the OP posted, and they're the best part.

You should take him seriously BECAUSE he died from cuckoldry. That's a real death for a real man.
If the story were told in 2025, then they would all live in peace as he joins them in a polyamorous throuple.

It's mildly anarchist I guess? The end of book 4 has Arthur think people should live in small local political units instead of kingdoms and empires. Maybe a little bit like Tolkien as that other anon said, I think Tolkien said he was a kind of monarchist-anarchist but (if I remember rightly) was cynical about any human government being good due to his Chriatianity.

Yeah, book of Merlyn is atrocious, just using Merlyn as a mouthpiece for White's own opinions and uninformed theories about hormones and politics. One case where I'm extremely glad a publisher forced an author to remove material from their work. The best parts were incorporated in the first four books so nothing of value is lost if you skip it.
