French spiritualism is fucking great in general. Ravaisson's Philosophical Testament is incredible.

I am fully convinced that if these guys are kind of forgotten nowadays it's precisely because they were optimists, which automatically makes one seem less interesting to a certain category of people. That and they were quite readable while being extremely profound. No word salad, no blasé posturing, and actually intellectually demanding. That's a bad combo.

Turn of the century french philosophy had a lot of interesting stuff, and it was killed off by midwits on both sides of the aisle (tortured existentialists on one side, neo-scholastic nutcases on the other)

Honestly one of the few authors who was right about everything. As a European, I am in awe of this man and think he advanced American and world culture with a single book of poetry, much like homer. I love his verses very much, Leaves of Grass especially.

The vast majority of philosophy readers are either analytic autists or masochists looking to justify their self-imposed misery and isolation through their favorite continental work, hence why neither want to read Bergson, Whitehead or Santayana.

The only reason why I haven't read Bergson is because he got eternally btfo'd by Einstein on the question of time, Whitehead got retroactively btfo'd by Parmesan cheese and a guenon monkey, and Santayana because he just strikes me as one of those guys known for quick, witty quotes that people like to share on X (and previously on Fagbook) like "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" and "Fanaticism consists in redoubling your effort when you have forgotten your aim".

idk, once I hit Heidegger and Wittgenstein, reading any more philosophy just felt kind of pointless, so I decided to go for learning a trade instead (I chose to become a sparky).
